1978 was an exceptional year for the ERC. Although the series was run for the first time with two different Divisions (TC = Touring Car Division and GT = GT Division), the FIA awarded just one European Cup, to the highest placed driver of both categories. Therefore, it was Martin Schanche who claimed his first European title, while Andy Bentza officially became his runner-up. However, the ERC round organisers kept two different standings, one for each Division, and inside the Rallycross scene Andy Bentza is rated as the 1978 European Champion of the GT category ever since.
